THE PECULIAR PLAN
Long scenic detour
I walk. I watch trees, forage whatever happens to be edible or handsome, and paint the landscapes. I take detours which often take me past old, humid stone houses and sleeping granges. Naturally, I want to start a fire, call it home, wake up the grange, and fill it with paint, canvases, odd projects, and an unreasonably long table.
I did try the usual path. I put on a respectable shirt, even glasses, and asked banks for a mortgage. They saw the word artist and gently showed me the door. They say, I'm a big risk.
But no bank gets to be the end of the story. So, plan B, the peculiar plan. Every month, I turn one of my landscape studies of that month into an archival print, add the field notes—the location, the weather, the observations, the thoughts—and mail them to you. It is an absurdly slow way to buy a house and a grange. Conveniently, I like absurdly slow detours when I walk. They often reveal wonders.
Your subscription pays for what arrives in your hands; whatever remains goes into the house-shaped jar. One correspondence at a time, we may eventually arrive at a house and grange, or we may wander somewhere entirely different. Either way, I’ll have good stories to tell, and you’ll have some very good prints to keep.
